The 212 Europa is the first model designed by PininFarina and is therefore a |
real milestone in the history of Ferrari. The works of Ferrari and Pinin Farina | |
have only produced just 16 cars from which only five cars still have their original | |
matching number engine. This is one of them.This 212 Europa Pinin | |
Farina Berlinetta presented here was purchased new by | |
film director Roberto Rosselini as a wedding anniversary present for his wife, the | |
movie star Ingrid Bergman. Rosselini himself was one of the most important | |
directors of Italian neo-realist cinema. Roberto Rosselini and Ingrid Bergman | |
were close friends with Enzo Ferrari. In a conversation with Enzo, Ingrid said in | |
regards to her custom ordered 212 Europa,"instead of getting a new flat we | |
are getting a new Ferrari with a bigger trunk." | |
After taking delivery of the Ferrari in Rome Rosselini and Bergman drove the car | |
north through the Alpes of northern Italy and Switzerland into Germany and then | |
caught a ferry to Denmark. They eventually arrived at the Grand Hotel in | |
Stockholm at 3.00 a.m. The following day Bergman received a movie award. | |
The car went to America in 1959 and in 1980 it was sold to Bob Smith who | |
completely restored it. John Ridings Lee from Texas acquired it in the early | |
nineties and later sold it to Erich Traber of Bern Switzerland. | |
The 212 Europa has undergone a painstaking restoration bringing the car back | |
to its original combination of silver (gray) over black and is ready to | |
participate in the most prestigious vintage Ferrari events. | |
Full documentation is available including copies of the first registration | |
document in the name of Roberto Rosselini himself. Part of the history file | |
contains many photos of the first trip Roberto Rosselini and Ingrid Bergman | |
took to Sweden in the car. | |
Regarding to its condition and marvellous history the 212 Europa we are pleased | |
