We are proud to offer the earliest Ferrari we ever had. The Ferrari 166 Inter

Berlinetta Touring carries SN 015 S which means nothing else than the 15th car

built by Ferrari.

The first road car produced by Ferrari was the Tipo 166 Inter. The car retained

the then already classic Ferrari V12 engine with the bore and stroke of 60 mm x

58.8 mm having a displacement of 1995 ccm, a compression ratio of 7.5 : 1

and a power output of 110 bhp at 6000 rpm. The engine was basically the same

as the sports car version but was often fitted with only one 32 DCF twin choke

Weber carburettor. The car had a dry weight of 980 kg.

Ferrari started in 1948 with two cars numbered # 001 and # 003 for which

Allemano has created the coachwork as a Spider and Coupe. Then the first 166

Inter Coupe was displayed alongside a 166 Mille Miglia Barchetta at the Turin

Motor Show in November 1948. Both cars were bodied by Touring of Milan, using

their Superleggera - superlight - construction method.

It would appear that from preparation of the prototype car for the Turin Motor

Show in late-Autumn 1948 to mid-summer '49, Touring actually mounted five

similar bodies of this type on suitable Ferrari 166 Inter chassiss. It is possible

that the Turin show car actually used # 005S, while the others were numbered

# 007S, # 013S, # 015S and # 017S - preserving the Ferrari system of even-

numbers serials for competition cars and odd-numbers for road-going models.

The # 015 S was originally painted in solid dark red and received a full grain

Conolly leather beige upholstery, Jaeger round gauges in the same colour of the

body, over ivory background and a beautiful three-spokes steering wheel that

Touring commissioned to a craftsman of Milan and which is still mountd in the

car today.

Completed in June 1948 the # 015 S was homologated in 1st of July in 1949.

The sale was agreed  between Carlo Botticelle, Ferrari sales agent and the

purchaser, Paolo Castelnuovo from Venezia, CEO of Sapras. Castelnuovo

registered the car in Milan on 5th of August and received the licence plate MI

133890. This is documented by a copy of its first Italian registration.

The first owner kept the 166 Inter until 1953 when it was sold to Massimo Alesi.

It passed two more owners in Italy until 1959 when the Italian Car Register

(PRA) had it cancelled due to the fact that it left the country being sold to South

Africa,

It had two owners in South Africa and was then sold into the US in 1978 where it

was offered by the Ferrari dealership of Atlanta FAF Motorcars. From there it was

short time later sold to England where it was seen in the famous workshop of

David and Kate Cottingham.

In 2000 its was offered by Autospeak near to Modena and found a new home in

Italy.

It received the Certificazione di Autenticita by Ferrari confirming the engine as

Tipo 166 matching number stamped with # 015 S, the gearbox Tipo 166 with its

numero interno stamped as # 166 S 5 and its differential stamped with # 166

No 015.

Over the years # 015 S had been perfectly restored, good enough to win each

Concours.
